Iranian Official Plays Down Prospects of Hormuz Deal at Monday Oman Meeting

A senior Iranian official has ruled out the prospect of a signed agreement on the Strait of Hormuz emerging from talks in Oman on Monday, September 14, saying the meeting is expected to focus on navigation arrangements in the waterway and broader regional issues rather than produce a final deal.
The official told Reuters that one of the main sticking points remains Tehran’s push for a future arrangement that would allow Iran to collect fees from ships passing through the strait. Oman opposes that proposal as discussions continue over the rules governing commercial traffic through the strategic waterway.
The meeting is part of an ongoing diplomatic track involving Oman and Iran aimed at finding workable arrangements for safe navigation through Hormuz. Previous talks have focused on maintaining maritime security and freedom of passage while the two sides continue to negotiate the terms of any longer-term framework.
The latest comments lower expectations ahead of Monday’s meeting and make clear that the talks should be viewed as part of a continuing negotiation process, rather than as a confirmed agreement to reopen or permanently regulate the strait.
