The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation has received a $100 million donation from an anonymous donor, the largest gift in the foundation's history, as it launches an ambitious $2.5 billion fundraising campaign to accelerate cancer research, treatment and patient care.
The foundation said the donor has a personal connection to cancer but chose not to be publicly identified. Unlike many major philanthropic gifts, the donation has not been restricted to a single program or project. Instead, the money can be directed toward the cancer centre's highest-priority needs across research, education and care.
The donation coincides with the public launch of Carry The Fire, a $2.5 billion initiative described by the foundation as the largest cancer fundraising campaign in Canadian history, designed to accelerate early detection, new forms of treatment and broader support for patients and their families.
The campaign is built around three major priorities. Stage 0 focuses on preventing, intercepting and detecting cancer at its earliest stages, before it becomes life-threatening. Beyond Chemotherapy aims to advance precision medicine, immunotherapy, theranostics, genomics and AI-enabled care to deliver more personalized treatments with fewer side effects.
A third priority, Boundless Cancer Care, focuses on the wider experience of living with and recovering from cancer, including rehabilitation, survivorship programs, mental-health resources and support for caregivers and families.
The unrestricted nature of the $100 million gift gives Princess Margaret unusual flexibility to move funding toward emerging research opportunities and urgent clinical priorities rather than committing the entire donation to a single disease, building or program. CityNews Toronto reported that the contribution is the largest donation for cancer care in Canadian history.
