Mustafa Khater Continues Treatment as Surgery Remains Possible

Egyptian actor Mustafa Khater is continuing treatment at his home in Cairo after suffering a painful kidney-stone episode during his participation in the Hurghada Youth Film Festival, with doctors still considering a minor surgical procedure if medication fails to clear the stones.

Medical examinations showed that Khater had small kidney stones, some of which moved into the ureter during treatment. The change in their location has affected the available treatment options, with doctors monitoring whether the stones can pass naturally with medication before deciding on an intervention.

Khater said his doctor informed him that a minor procedure may be required to remove the stones if drug treatment does not produce the expected results. No final decision on surgery has been made.

The health scare began while Khater was in Hurghada attending the film festival, when he suddenly developed severe pain and renal colic and was taken to hospital for medical tests and treatment.

The actor reportedly required hospital care twice within about 48 hours as the pain returned, before he was discharged and continued his treatment outside the hospital.

Khater said the pain struck unexpectedly during his appearance at the festival’s opening ceremony, despite having experienced no clear warning symptoms beforehand. Subsequent examinations confirmed the presence of kidney stones, including a stone that had moved into the ureter.

He later returned to Cairo to continue his recovery and did not attend the festival’s closing ceremony. Doctors are now following his response to medication before determining whether any further medical procedure will be necessary.
