Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has kicked off an official visit to India designed to steady and reset the relationship while putting trade back at the centre of the agenda, as Ottawa looks to widen its circle of partners and dial down its exposure to the U.S. market.

The visit begins with a business-focused leg in Mumbai, where Carney is expected to meet with corporate leaders and explore ways to restart momentum toward a broad, comprehensive trade arrangement.

He then heads to New Delhi for the formal diplomatic program. India’s Ministry of External Affairs schedule places Carney in the capital on March 1, with delegation-level talks planned for March 2 alongside official meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
