The union representing employees at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says staff were told that 1,371 positions are being affected by “employment transition measures” under a government-wide cost-cutting exercise, with 587 jobs set to be eliminated outright — a move the union says could strain Canada’s food safety system.

A Canadian Press report carried by CityNews notes that losing 1,371 positions would represent more than one-fifth of the agency’s workforce, while Treasury Board Secretariat data show CFIA had 6,380 employees as of March 31, 2025, down from 6,833 in 2024 and 6,929 in 2023.

The Agriculture Union and the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) have called the cuts reckless and urged Ottawa to publish a government-wide staffing plan.

The measures come amid Budget 2025’s “Comprehensive Expenditure Review,” which targets $60 billion in savings over five years and projects a reduction of roughly 40,000 public service positions by 2028–29 from a 2023–24 peak.
