ChatGPT Memory Enters a New Phase

Using ChatGPT may no longer feel like starting from zero every time. OpenAI has announced a major upgrade to ChatGPT’s memory system, designed to help the assistant better understand a user’s context, preferences, projects, and constraints, while keeping that information more current over time.

The update, announced on June 4, 2026, introduces a more advanced system for synthesizing memory. Instead of relying only on specific details users explicitly ask ChatGPT to remember, the new system can draw on important context from previous conversations when that context is useful. OpenAI says the goal is to help new conversations begin from shared context, especially for long-running projects, repeated tasks, writing preferences, and work routines.

ChatGPT’s memory first launched in 2024 through saved memories, where users could ask the system to remember specific information. In 2025, OpenAI expanded memory by allowing ChatGPT to reference broader chat context. The latest upgrade is built on a more capable architecture called “Dreaming,” which is intended to reduce stale, conflicting, or outdated memory over time.

For everyday users, the change could be practical. Someone who regularly asks ChatGPT to write in a specific style, plan travel, support a work project, or follow certain communication preferences may not need to repeat the same background information in every new chat. The system is expected to use relevant context more smoothly when it can improve the response.

The update also raises important questions about privacy and user control. OpenAI says users can manage memory in settings, review a memory summary, correct details, or ask ChatGPT not to mention certain information again. Users can also turn memory off or use Temporary Chats when they do not want a conversation to influence future responses.

OpenAI says the new system is rolling out first to Plus and Pro users in the United States, with more countries and plans, including Free and Go, expected to follow in the coming weeks. That means users in Canada and other markets may receive the full update gradually rather than immediately.

The change does not mean ChatGPT will remember everything perfectly, nor does it remove the need for users to review sensitive or outdated information. But it does mark a clear shift from a limited saved-notes feature toward a more dynamic memory system that tries to understand what remains useful and what should change with time.
