Christine Fréchette is being sworn in today, Wednesday, April 15, 2026, as premier of Quebec after winning the leadership of the Coalition Avenir Québec, replacing François Legault in a major political transition for the province.

Fréchette secured the party leadership on April 12 after defeating Bernard Drainville. With that victory, she became the first woman to lead the CAQ and only the second woman in Quebec history to serve as premier, after Pauline Marois.

She now takes office at a politically sensitive moment, with reports indicating she is expected to name a new cabinet next week and unveil at least one measure tied to affordability and the cost of living in the coming days.
