A regional Air Canada Express flight from Montreal turned into a major tragedy at New York’s LaGuardia Airport after the aircraft collided with a fire truck while landing late Sunday. The plane, a CRJ-900 operated by Jazz Aviation, was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members. The crash killed the pilot and co-pilot, both based in Canada, and injured dozens of passengers and ground personnel.

Authorities said 41 people were taken to hospital after the collision, although most were later released. Several serious injuries were reported, and the impact caused major damage to the front of the aircraft while overturning the emergency vehicle. The crash also forced a temporary shutdown at LaGuardia and triggered broad flight disruptions.

Preliminary information indicates the fire truck had been responding to a separate incident involving another aircraft that reported an onboard odor. It had been cleared to cross the runway shortly before the Montreal flight arrived. U.S. authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration, have opened a full investigation, while Canada’s Transportation Safety Board has also sent a team to assist.

The crash quickly became one of the most significant aviation stories of the morning in North America, both because of the scale of the injuries and because the flight originated in Montreal and the two pilots killed were Canadian.
