Europe Pushes for a Mercosur Deal Despite Internal Pushback in Farming Countries

The European Union is renewing efforts to advance a trade agreement with Mercosur, even as opposition grows in several EU member states with influential farming sectors, amid concerns over competition, prices, and farmer protections.
Critics argue the deal could increase imports of agricultural goods—especially meat—placing pressure on local producers, while calling for clear safeguards on environmental standards, supply chains, and sustainability commitments. Supporters, however, view the agreement as a strategic opportunity to expand market access, deepen trade partnerships, and diversify supply routes.
Negotiations and domestic political debates are expected to continue in the coming period before any final framework is reached.
