The Canadian federal government has announced C$1.01 billion in funding for Canada Post, provided in the form of a repayable loan, aimed at ensuring the continued delivery of postal services across the country amid mounting financial pressures.
In a statement, Ottawa described the funding as a “temporary bridge”, designed to support Canada Post’s day-to-day operations while broader structural and financial reforms are pursued to restore long-term stability. The government stressed that the loan does not represent a permanent bailout, but rather a transitional measure tied to a reform agenda.
Canada Post has faced ongoing challenges in recent years, including declining volumes of traditional mail, rising operational costs, and increased competition in the parcel-delivery market. Federal officials emphasized that maintaining reliable postal service—particularly for rural, remote, and vulnerable communities—remains a national priority.
Canada Post welcomed the announcement, saying the loan will provide critical breathing room to maintain services for households and businesses while implementing necessary operational changes.
