General Motors is set to eliminate the third shift at its Oshawa Assembly Plant in Ontario, a move expected to reduce direct employment at the facility and trigger wider job losses across the supply chain that could exceed 1,000 positions, according to Unifor.
Reuters reported GM said the third shift had been added on a temporary basis to meet post-pandemic pickup-truck demand and rebuild inventories, and that the return to a two-shift operation is tied to production scheduling rather than U.S. tariffs.
Unifor has criticized the decision, arguing production is being shifted to the United States and saying the impact will extend beyond Oshawa to parts suppliers and other linked employers.
GM has pointed to ongoing investments in Canada, including a C$280 million commitment for future truck production in Oshawa, part of more than C$2.6 billion the company says it invested in Canadian manufacturing over the past five years.
