A series of chain-reaction crashes involving about 50 vehicles forced the closure of Highway 401 near Trenton in eastern Ontario on Tuesday, Jan. 27, amid snow and reduced visibility, according to police and fire officials.
Ontario Provincial Police said the collisions happened around 8:30 a.m., with no fatalities or serious injuries reported. Three to five people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police photos showed burned vehicles and spinach scattered across the roadway from a transport truck involved in the crash. OPP also said a woman was pulled from a vehicle moments before it became engulfed in flames.
An emergency detour route was activated and a warming centre opened for stranded motorists, while authorities urged drivers to slow down and leave more space during winter squalls
