Volkswagen is assessing the future of its Osnabrueck plant in Germany as production of the T-Roc Cabriolet there is due to end in 2027. The site employs about 2,300 people, and the company is examining whether defence-related work could offer the factory a new role instead of leaving it facing an uncertain future.

Recent reports say Volkswagen is in talks with Rafael Advanced Defence Systems over the possible production of air-defence-related components linked to the Iron Dome system at the site. At the same time, Volkswagen has said it is ruling out producing weapons themselves at the factory, and no final production plan has been announced.

Earlier this month, the company also showed prototype military-use vehicles developed in Osnabrueck at a defence trade fair in Nuremberg, suggesting it is testing market interest before making a final decision. The case reflects a broader European trend in which defence companies are looking at underused automotive capacity as military spending rises.
