Cybersecurity firm Malwarebytes said a dataset allegedly linked to around 17 million Instagram users has been offered on underground forums, warning that exposed contact details could fuel phishing emails designed to hijack user accounts.

Malwarebytes said the records include account identifiers and contact details such as usernames, full names, user IDs, email addresses, phone numbers, countries, and partial location data. The firm noted the dataset does not appear to contain passwords, but could still be used to craft convincing scams and password-reset lures.

The warning comes as some users reported waves of unsolicited Instagram password reset emails. Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has said there was no breach of its systems and that the reset-email surge stemmed from an issue that allowed an external party to trigger password reset emails for some users, which it said has since been fixed
