Mammograms may reveal an added heart-risk signal in women

Recent health coverage suggests mammograms may provide an additional signal beyond breast-cancer screening: calcium deposits in breast arteries, a finding that can be associated with higher future cardiovascular risk in some women.
According to the report, researchers tracked repeat mammograms from thousands of women over several years and found that the appearance or progression of these arterial calcifications over time may align with a higher likelihood of later cardiovascular events. The analysis also used digital tools, including AI-supported methods, to quantify the severity and changes of calcification—turning an incidental finding on a routine test into a potential early prompt for basic risk checks such as blood pressure and cholesterol, alongside lifestyle review.
Experts stressed the finding is not a stand-alone diagnosis, but it may improve earlier awareness of heart risk in women, who are often diagnosed later in the course of disease.
