Meta Smart Glasses Spark New Privacy Alarm Over Facial Recognition

Meta is facing fresh pressure after a coalition of civil rights and privacy organizations warned against reported plans to add facial recognition technology to its Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses.
The warning, led by the ACLU and signed by 75 organizations, argues that such a feature could turn everyday eyewear into a tool for identifying people in public without their consent.
The concern focuses on a reported feature known as “Name Tag,” which could allow users to recognize people in real time through smart glasses. Meta has not officially launched the feature, but privacy advocates are urging the company to abandon the idea before it reaches consumers.
For critics, the issue is not only innovation, but public safety. They warn that facial recognition in wearable devices could expose women, abuse survivors, immigrants, and vulnerable communities to stalking, harassment, or unwanted tracking.
