The latest MNP Consumer Debt Index shows Canadians are bracing for a tougher 2026, with 71% expecting the cost of living to worsen. It also found 59% anticipate a weaker economy and higher housing pressure, 54% expect interest-rate and inflation strain, and 52% foresee job-market weakness.
The index edged up one point to 87. Still, 41% say they are within $200 of not being able to pay monthly bills, while average month-end “wiggle room” rose to $907.
Only 47% report having six months of emergency savings, the report added.
