Musk predicts space could become the cheapest home for AI within 30 to 36 months

Elon Musk predicted that “in 36 months, but probably closer to 30 months,” space could become the most economically compelling place to run artificial intelligence, framing the timeline as a cost-and-scaling argument rather than a countdown to an imminent global crisis.
He tied the prediction to growing energy constraints for AI infrastructure on Earth, arguing that orbital systems powered by solar energy could scale faster under fewer land and grid limitations.
The Associated Press reported that scientists and industry experts remain skeptical, citing major hurdles including heat management in vacuum conditions, space debris risks, and the lack of practical repair and replacement options in orbit.
