Ontario: Parents call for a provincewide standard of care for students with diabetes in schools

Parents in Ontario are urging the province to adopt a consistent, provincewide standard of care for students living with diabetes, saying day-to-day support can vary widely between classrooms, schools, and boards, with potential safety consequences during routine care and emergencies.
Global News reported that while technologies such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors help families track glucose levels, they do not replace the need for practical in-school assistance, particularly for younger students and those with additional support needs.
Ontario already has provincial direction requiring school boards to maintain policies and individual plans of care for prevalent medical conditions including diabetes, effective since 2018, but parents say implementation can still be uneven.
National health organizations have also pushed for mandatory, consistent standards to ensure students can participate safely and fully in school life, supported by trained staff and clear care plans.
