A powerful winter storm swept across southern Ontario and parts of Quebec over the past hours, severely disrupting road traffic and air travel, as authorities warned against non-essential travel due to poor visibility and icy conditions.
Canadian media reports said Ontario Provincial Police responded to nearly 200 traffic collisions within a 24-hour period, while more than 125 vehicles were stranded in snowbanks or off roads across the Greater Toronto Area, prompting officials to urge drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
At Toronto Pearson Airport, authorities reported that more than 20 centimeters of snow accumulated around the airport, leading to widespread delays and cancellations at both Pearson and Billy Bishop airports as crews worked to clear runways and maintain operations.
In Quebec, Hydro-Quebec said the storm caused significant power outages, with the number of affected customers peaking at around 9,440 before gradually declining as emergency repair crews restored service.
Environment Canada warned that harsh winter conditions could persist in some areas, advising residents to monitor weather updates and take safety precautions amid falling temperatures and strong winds.
