OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens With Stronger Safety and Parental Controls

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, an experience designed for users aged 13 to 17 with stronger safety protections and learning tools intended to help young users think through problems rather than simply receive answers.
The experience began rolling out globally on August 18 to eligible accounts on Free and paid personal ChatGPT plans. It is automatically enabled when account information, verified age or OpenAI’s age-prediction systems indicate that a user is under 18.
ChatGPT for Teens includes stronger safeguards around sensitive topics and learning-focused features such as study guides, quizzes and step-by-step problem solving. OpenAI has also added reminders encouraging teens to take breaks during extended use.
The company is also seeking to reduce emotional dependence on AI. Its rules for users under 18 say ChatGPT should not encourage emotional attachment, use romantic language or suggest that it has feelings or consciousness, while directing teens toward healthy real-world relationships and support.
Parents can link their accounts to a teen’s account and manage settings including quiet hours, Study Mode, memory, voice and image generation. However, OpenAI says parental controls do not allow parents or guardians to read or monitor a teen’s conversations.
The launch comes amid growing scrutiny over the impact of AI chatbots on teen mental health and concerns about young users relying on conversational AI for schoolwork or emotional support.
