Rising Ottawa River levels put flood-prone communities on alert

Communities along the Ottawa River are being urged to stay alert as water levels and flows continue to rise, driven by recent rainfall and spring snowmelt across parts of the Ottawa River basin.
The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board says levels are rising along the main stem of the river, while reservoirs are retaining spring runoff to help reduce downstream flooding. Minor flood levels have already been exceeded or are expected soon in flood-prone areas from Pembroke down to Carillon.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for the Lower Ottawa River from Arnprior to Hawkesbury until April 27, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. Authorities say minor flooding is expected or likely in flood-prone areas, while major flood levels could be exceeded in some locations over the weekend and early next week.
Residents in low-lying areas are being advised to prepare now by checking sump pumps, clearing downspouts and culverts, securing outdoor items, and staying away from fast-moving water and unstable riverbanks. Families are also being urged to keep children and pets away from waterways while flows remain high.
Officials say the situation remains uncertain, and the possibility of major flood levels from Lac Coulonge to Masson and Cumberland cannot be ruled out over the next few days.
The alert comes after repeated rainfall left the ground near saturation in parts of the Ottawa region, limiting its ability to absorb additional water. Rain remains possible over the weekend, making official updates especially important for residents living near the river or in areas that have flooded in previous spring seasons.
