Ottawa summons OpenAI safety leaders for answers after Tumbler Ridge tragedy

Canada’s federal government is seeking answers from OpenAI and other AI platforms about safety safeguards and when companies should escalate concerning user activity to police. The move follows reports that an account linked to the Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia attacker was flagged and shut down months earlier, without a law enforcement notification at the time.
Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon said senior members of OpenAI’s safety team have been called to Ottawa to explain the company’s escalation thresholds and its decision making on referrals to law enforcement. Reuters reported the meeting is set for Tuesday, February 24, 2026, and OpenAI said it will discuss its safety approach and safeguards with Canadian officials.
OpenAI has said the account was banned in June 2025 after being detected through abuse monitoring, but it did not meet the company’s threshold for reporting because it was not assessed as an imminent and credible risk of serious physical harm.
B.C. Premier David Eby said police are pursuing preservation orders for potential digital evidence held by online service providers, including social media and AI companies, and described the reports about prior signals as profoundly disturbing.
Global News also reported that B.C. officials outlined earlier interactions with OpenAI, including a pre scheduled February 11 meeting tied to the company’s interest in a Canadian office. The province said OpenAI requested RCMP contact details the next day, but did not tell government officials then that it held potentially relevant evidence.
Practical note
For immediate threats or safety concerns, the appropriate first step is contacting local emergency services or police. AI chatbots are not a substitute for reporting or professional support in high risk situations.
