A federal e-petition on the House of Commons website is calling on Parliament to require all federal party leaders to obtain and maintain top-secret security clearance, arguing it would ensure leaders are fully briefed on national security threats and can act quickly to protect Canadians and democracy.
The petition cites warnings from Canada’s intelligence service (CSIS) that political parties, elected officials and candidates can be targets of foreign interference, and says security clearance would help party leaders take timely, informed action in a shifting geopolitical environment.
The Canadian Press report notes the petition points to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s long-standing refusal to seek clearance, while Poilievre argues that getting cleared would restrict his ability to speak publicly or criticize the government based on classified briefings.
According to the petition page, it was initiated by Marc Hachey of Manotick, Ontario, and sponsored by Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy (Carleton). It opened for signatures on Feb. 6, 2026 at 1:58 p.m. ET and is set to close on April 7, 2026 at 1:58 p.m. ET.
