PlayStation’s Disc Era Nears Its End as Sony Sets 2028 Cutoff

Sony is preparing to close a defining chapter in the history of video gaming, announcing that physical disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028.

Under the new policy, games launching after the cutoff will be distributed digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers. Retail stores may continue selling download codes, but newly released titles will no longer arrive in traditional disc cases.

Sony said the change reflects shifting consumer habits and the growing preference for digital purchases. Digital downloads accounted for approximately 80% of the company’s full-game sales during its 2025 fiscal year, highlighting how rapidly physical media has lost market share.

The decision will not affect games already released on disc or titles scheduled to launch physically before January 2028. Existing PlayStation discs will remain usable, while retailers may continue selling physical copies for as long as inventory remains available.

Sony’s transition toward an all-digital ecosystem has been developing for several years. The company introduced a disc-free version of the PlayStation 5 in 2020 and has continued expanding the PlayStation Store, subscription services and cloud-based gaming options.

However, the announcement has raised concerns among collectors, preservation advocates and consumers who prefer genuine physical ownership. Unlike downloadable games, discs can usually be lent, resold or purchased second-hand without depending entirely on an online account or digital storefront.

Critics also warn that a digital-only future could give platform owners greater control over pricing and availability. A game removed from an online store may become difficult to obtain legally, while account suspensions, licensing disputes or server closures could affect access to previously purchased content.

Specialized game retailers may also face additional pressure as the used-game market declines. Physical releases have traditionally generated revenue through new sales, trade-ins and reselling, opportunities that become far more limited when games are tied to digital accounts.

January 2028 will therefore mark an important turning point for PlayStation. Physical games will not disappear immediately, and older discs will continue to circulate, but Sony’s decision confirms that future PlayStation releases are moving firmly toward digital-only distribution.
