A fast-moving grass fire killed four Canadian soldiers and injured 39 others during a live-fire training exercise at CFB Wainwright in Alberta on Saturday, October 17. Nineteen of the injured were in critical condition, military and provincial officials confirmed Sunday.
The fire broke out shortly before 4 p.m. as members of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, were conducting combat training. Military commanders said the flames initially appeared manageable before a sudden increase in wind speed sent the fire racing across the training area. At one point, it travelled approximately one kilometre in under a minute.
The Canadian Armed Forces identified the dead as Sergeant Morgan Wong and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding and Hayden Lykkemark. The emergency response involved ground and air ambulances, with injured personnel transferred to hospitals in Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer. Some patients suffered severe burns and may require prolonged treatment.
Prime Minister Mark Carney called the incident one of the worst peacetime tragedies for Canada's military on home soil and ordered flags on federal buildings lowered to half-staff.
Training involving the affected battalion has been suspended while military investigators examine the fire's origin, its rapid spread and whether existing safety procedures were adequate. Officials have not established what initially ignited the blaze.
