A new Leger survey suggests most Canadians support allowing more China-made electric vehicles onto the market, even as many respondents cite worries about quality, privacy and potential fallout for Canada’s auto sector.

The poll found 61% of respondents support the move, including 24% who strongly support it and 38% who somewhat support it. Awareness of the Ottawa–Beijing agreement was also high, with roughly seven in 10 saying they had heard about the deal, and support peaking in Quebec.

The findings land amid Canada’s shift to a 6.1% tariff rate for a capped annual quota of 49,000 Chinese-made EVs, with China expected to ease retaliatory tariffs affecting Canadian agricultural exports.

Despite the overall approval, the survey indicates three-quarters of respondents reported at least one concern. Top issues included vehicle quality and durability, impacts on Canadian manufacturing, data security and privacy, safety, and broader geopolitical or national-security considerations.
