Quebec leadership race opens after Legault exit

Quebec’s ruling Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) has entered a leadership race following the announced departure of Premier François Legault, triggering renewed debate over the future direction of the province, including its approach to secularism laws restricting religious symbols.
Several senior cabinet members are viewed as potential contenders to succeed Legault as party leader and premier. Among the most frequently cited names are Simon Jolin-Barrette, Geneviève Guilbault, Christine Fréchette, Sonia LeBel, and Bernard Drainville.
The leadership contest is drawing particular attention to Quebec’s secularism framework, including Bill 21, which restricts the wearing of religious symbols by certain public sector employees. The law, adopted under Legault’s government, remains popular among parts of the CAQ base while facing continued criticism from civil liberties groups and religious minorities.
Political analysts note that figures such as Jolin-Barrette and Drainville are widely associated with a stricter interpretation of secularism laws, while other potential candidates have focused more heavily on economic or administrative priorities.
The CAQ is expected to outline the rules and timeline for the leadership race in the coming weeks, ahead of Quebec’s next provincial election.
