Quebec unemployment falls as job growth points to a cautious economic recovery

Quebec posted a lower unemployment rate in March 2026, with joblessness falling to 5.4 percent, down 0.5 percentage points from February, as the province added about 9,900 jobs and total employment rose to 4,622,300, according to Statistics Canada and the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
The improvement came as Canada’s national unemployment rate held steady at 6.7 percent in March, making Quebec one of the more notable positive provincial labour market stories in the latest monthly data.
Still, the broader economic picture remains cautious. Quebec’s March 2026 economic and financial update said real GDP growth slowed to 0.8 percent in 2025 and is expected to improve only gradually, reaching 1.1 percent in 2026 and 1.4 percent in 2027. The province has framed the outlook as one shaped by a shifting economic environment, even as it continues to support business activity, infrastructure and targeted relief measures.
For workers and households, March’s numbers offer an encouraging sign that Quebec’s labour market is still creating jobs. But they do not yet point to a fast or broad-based rebound. The recovery appears real, though still modest and vulnerable to wider economic headwinds.
