Report: Targeted job choices can strengthen Express Entry path for international graduates

A recent report said international students and newly graduated workers can improve their prospects of becoming permanent residents if they gain Canadian work experience in occupations that align with Express Entry category-based draws, noting that the key factor is the type of job and its match to targeted categories rather than the employer’s name.

Under IRCC’s category-based selection, candidates may be invited based on French-language proficiency or recent experience in specific occupational groups. IRCC’s current categories include French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, agriculture and agri-food, education, and physicians with Canadian work experience.

IRCC has also signaled a stronger emphasis on in-Canada experience in recent draw planning, including a focus on candidates with Canadian work experience (Canadian Experience Class) and targeted rounds aimed at priority sectors such as health, trades, education, and French-language proficiency.

At the same time, IRCC has removed the extra Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points that used to be awarded for arranged employment. IRCC states that, as of March 25, 2025, job offers no longer receive CRS points, though a valid job offer can still matter for eligibility in some programs and streams and should still be listed in an Express Entry profile when relevant.
