An EU-funded consumer safety investigation has warned that widely used headphones may contain chemicals of concern, after laboratory screening reported traces of endocrine-disrupting substances and other compounds in every product tested.
Arnika, a partner in the ToxFree LIFE for All project, said researchers analysed 180 samples from hard and soft plastic components taken from 81 in-ear and over-ear headphone products purchased across five Central European countries and from online marketplaces.
The project said bisphenols were the most prevalent: BPA appeared in 98% of samples and BPS in more than three-quarters, with a reported maximum concentration of 351 mg/kg. Other compounds cited included phthalates, chlorinated paraffins and flame retardants.
Project experts said the immediate risk is not the core concern; rather, they highlighted long-term, low-level exposure and noted that heat and sweat could increase the potential for chemical migration from plastics to the skin.
