Statistics Canada says income and wealth inequality widened in the third quarter of 2025, with higher-income and wealthier households benefiting more from financial market gains.
The agency reported the gap in the share of disposable income between the top 40% and bottom 40% rose to 47.5 percentage points, up from 46.3 a year earlier. The bottom 20% saw average disposable income edge down 0.5% year over year, while the top 20% rose 4.3%.
On wealth, the top 20% held 65.5% of Canada’s total net worth, averaging about $3.5 million per household. The bottom 40% accounted for 3.1%, averaging $82,100 per household. The wealth gap reached 62.4 percentage points, up 0.5 points from a year earlier.
