Statistics Canada: Women live longer than men, but healthy years do not always keep pace with longevity

A new report released by Statistics Canada shows that women in Canada continue to live longer than men and spend more years in good health, based on the health-adjusted life expectancy indicator.

In 2023, life expectancy at birth reached 84.0 years for women, compared with 79.6 years for men. Health-adjusted life expectancy at birth stood at 67.7 years for women and 66.4 years for men.

The report notes that while women experience more years of good health overall, this does not necessarily translate into a higher proportion of life spent in good health. Men, on average, spend a greater share of their lifespan in good health, while women tend to live longer with health-related limitations.

Statistics Canada also highlighted that increases in overall life expectancy are not always matched by equivalent gains in healthy years. The findings suggest that longer lifespans have not consistently resulted in a compression of morbidity, meaning that the share of life spent in good health has not increased at the same pace as longevity.
