Third Walmart closure in Montreal area raises questions about local shopping access

Walmart Canada is set to close its Dorval store in the Montreal area on July 17, 2026, making it the third Walmart closure announced in the region this month after Côte-des-Neiges and Pointe-aux-Trembles. The Dorval store is located at 400 Dorval Avenue.

The company says the decision is part of an ongoing review of its store footprint and formats, and that affected employees will be offered positions at nearby stores. Walmart pointed customers to nearby locations including Pointe-Claire, Kirkland, LaSalle, Jean-Talon and Saint-Laurent, as well as Walmart.ca delivery services.

The Dorval closure follows the announced shutdown of the Côte-des-Neiges store on June 19 and the Pointe-aux-Trembles store on June 26. Retail sector reports say more than 330 employees are expected to be affected across the three locations, though Walmart has said associates will be offered opportunities at nearby stores.

The closures carry both economic and community implications, especially in neighbourhoods where large discount retailers play a role in access to affordable groceries and daily essentials. The departure of a major anchor tenant can also reduce foot traffic for surrounding small businesses.

Walmart says it remains committed to Quebec, pointing to planned investments, store renovations and a broader national strategy worth 6.5 billion dollars. Still, the company has not provided detailed replacement plans for the Montreal-area stores being closed.
