Toronto Helps Deliver Carney’s Majority as Liberals Win Two Key Ridings

The Liberal Party has secured two important victories in Toronto, winning the federal by-elections in Scarborough Southwest and University-Rosedale in results that helped Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government reach a parliamentary majority.
Liberal candidate Doly Begum won in Scarborough Southwest, while Danielle Martin won in University-Rosedale. Together with another Liberal win in Quebec, the results brought the party to 174 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons, allowing the government to pass legislation without relying on opposition support.
The Toronto results carry strong local significance. Both ridings reflect urban, diverse communities where federal politics often intersects with affordability, housing, public services, and newcomer priorities.
For Carney, the wins transform a minority government into a more stable mandate. For Toronto, they confirm the city’s continued weight in shaping the balance of power in Ottawa.
