U.S. President Donald Trump threatened a 50% tariff on aircraft sold into the United States from Canada and raised the prospect of decertification measures, tying the move to a dispute over Canada’s certification timeline for Gulfstream business jets.
Reuters reported that Trump said he was “decertifying” Bombardier Global Express jets and warned of a 50% tariff on “any and all” Canadian aircraft if the issue is not “immediately corrected.” Canada’s Industry Minister Melanie Joly told CBC that certification should not be politicized and said Transport Canada is in contact with U.S. officials, adding she believes the dispute can be resolved.
A White House official told Reuters Trump was not suggesting decertifying Canadian-built aircraft currently in operation, but the threat still stirred concern across the aviation sector. Reuters cited data showing 5,425 Canada-made aircraft of various types are registered in the U.S.
