The United States is moving to close the historic Border Road to Canadian traffic this summer near Coutts in southern Alberta, ending a long-standing route used for decades by families and farmers on both sides of the border.

According to a report published by The Canadian Press on Monday, March 30, 2026, the road stretches about 14 kilometres along the Alberta-Montana boundary. Although it lies on U.S. territory, it has long been used by nearby Canadian residents for local travel, access to farmland, and visits between neighbours and relatives.

Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Devin Dreeshen said the province was informed last year that U.S. authorities were moving to tighten enforcement in this section of the border and in other nearby areas located on American territory.

Alberta has allocated $8 million to build a parallel road on the Canadian side in partnership with Warner County. Construction is expected to begin in April, with completion targeted for the summer. Alberta’s 2026 budget documents also include an $8 million line for the County of Warner Border Road project.

The closure is expected to bring a direct change to daily life in the border region, where residents have long relied on the route for local movement and for maintaining social and agricultural ties across the boundary.
