Why Washington Is Pushing Back on Online Safety Laws

The United States has stepped up its criticism of European and UK “online safety” and content-governance rules, arguing that parts of the framework could undermine free speech and impose far-reaching obligations on U.S. companies operating abroad.
Reuters reporting has described U.S. moves ranging from a visa policy aimed at foreign officials accused of “flagrant censorship” of Americans online to diplomatic efforts encouraging resistance to EU rules such as the Digital Services Act (DSA).
On the trade front, Reuters also reported warnings of potential countermeasures against European service providers in response to what Washington called discriminatory actions, while EU officials insist their rules are applied fairly to all companies and are meant to build a safer, more level digital environment.
