Air Canada Temporarily Suspends Toronto and Montreal Flights to JFK Over Fuel Costs

Air Canada is temporarily suspending its flights from Toronto and Montreal to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport from June 1, 2026, to October 25, 2026, as rising jet fuel costs force new changes to the airline’s schedule.

The airline said jet fuel prices have doubled since the beginning of the Iran conflict, making some lower-profitability routes and flights no longer economically viable. The affected routes include JFK service from both Toronto and Montreal, with plans to resume service in the fall.

According to Reuters, Air Canada will reduce its daily flights to New York from 38 to 34, with the cuts focused on JFK. The airline will continue serving the New York area through LaGuardia and Newark, giving passengers other options for reaching the city.

Air Canada said affected customers will be contacted with alternate travel options. Travellers booked on JFK flights between June 1 and October 25 are advised to check their email, the Air Canada app, and their booking status before travelling.

The move comes as airlines face growing pressure from higher global fuel costs, prompting some carriers to reduce capacity on less profitable routes, adjust schedules, or shift passengers to alternative airports.

The change is especially important for travellers from Toronto and Montreal, as JFK is a major New York gateway and a key connection point for international travel. Some passengers may need to adjust travel times or accept an alternate New York-area airport.
