Davies Injury Clouds Canada’s World Cup Opener Hopes

Canada’s World Cup preparations have been hit by a major concern, with captain Alphonso Davies likely to miss the team’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12 because of injury.
Head coach Jesse Marsch said he expects Davies to play during the tournament, but admitted the Bayern Munich star may not be ready in time for Canada’s first game. Davies has been recovering from a hamstring injury suffered while playing for Bayern Munich in early May.
Davies was included in Canada’s 32-player training camp squad ahead of the final World Cup roster announcement, but his recovery is being managed carefully in coordination with Bayern Munich and Canada’s medical staff. Canada Soccer said the official roster will be announced on May 29.
The possible absence is a serious blow for Canada, not only because Davies is one of the team’s most influential players, but also because he represents the ambition of a new generation preparing to compete on home soil. Canada is co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Mexico, making this tournament one of the most important sporting moments in the country’s history.
For Marsch and his staff, the challenge is now to balance the emotion of a home World Cup with the need to protect Davies’ long-term fitness. Canada will hope its captain can return later in the tournament, even if the opening match comes too soon.
