McNulty Wins World Cycling Title in Montreal, Ending 33-Year U.S. Wait

American cyclist Brandon McNulty capped the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal with a historic victory Sunday, launching a decisive solo attack about 32 kilometres from the finish to secure the United States’ first elite men’s road race world title since 1993.
The 273.4-kilometre race began in Brossard, south of Montreal, before reaching the city's demanding circuit, where riders completed 12 laps. The route included roughly 3,578 metres of climbing.
McNulty made his decisive move with 32 kilometres remaining and at one stage built an advantage of more than a minute. His U.S. teammates played a key tactical role behind him, responding to repeated attacks from the chasing group.
His advantage fell to around 10 seconds on the final major climb, but McNulty held on and crossed the finish line in 6:17:04. Australian Michael Matthews took silver, 13 seconds behind, while Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel claimed bronze with the same time gap.
The U.S. also placed Quinn Simmons fourth and Matteo Jorgenson eighth, giving the American team three riders inside the top 10.
Montreal hosted the championships from September 20 to 27, marking another chapter in the city's cycling history after it became the first location outside Europe to host the Road World Championships in 1974.
