Australia’s new online age restrictions drive surge in VPN downloads

Australia began enforcing broader age restrictions on certain websites and online services starting March 9, in a move aimed at strengthening protections for minors on the internet.
However, the new measures have also triggered a noticeable rise in downloads of VPN applications, tools that allow users to mask their real geographic location and bypass some online restrictions.
The regulations require age-verification mechanisms before users can access certain platforms or types of content, a policy that has sparked debate over the balance between protecting children and preserving user privacy.
Cybersecurity experts say stricter age-verification systems often push some users to look for ways to bypass restrictions, including the use of virtual private networks.
This trend also raises new questions about the safety of VPN services themselves, including how user data is handled and whether all providers offer reliable privacy protections.
Analysts say the development reflects a broader global shift toward regulating online content as governments respond to growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on children and teenagers.
