Axios reported that the United States, Iran and regional mediators are pushing for a 45-day ceasefire as part of an effort to open a path toward a broader agreement that could eventually end the war. According to the report, Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan are involved in mediation, and the proposed framework would begin with a temporary truce while wider negotiations continue, with the option of an extension if more time is needed. Axios said the chances of securing even a partial breakthrough soon remain slim. Reuters, meanwhile, said it could not independently verify the Axios report at the time of publication, and that there was no immediate comment from the White House or the U.S. State Department.

The push comes under intense pressure after what Axios described as a 20-hour extension to a U.S. deadline now running until Tuesday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The talks are also tied to highly sensitive issues, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile.
