Canada tests Alert Ready system today

Canadians in most provinces and territories are expected to receive a test message today, Wednesday, May 6, 2026, from Alert Ready, Canada’s public emergency alerting system.
The test will be sent through compatible wireless devices, television and radio in participating regions. According to the official Alert Ready schedule, the May 6 test includes several provinces and territories, including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island and Yukon. Quebec has no test scheduled, Saskatchewan’s test has been cancelled, and Ontario’s test is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2026, at 1:55 p.m. EDT.
Public Safety Canada says the National Public Alerting System test will be sent on May 6 and May 7 in participating provinces and territories over wireless networks, television and radio. Canadians will receive the test message from their provincial or territorial government.
The alert will simulate an emergency message but will clearly state that it is only a test and that no action is required. The message is expected to begin with the Canadian Alert Attention Signal before appearing on devices or broadcast platforms.
The purpose of the test is to make sure Canadians recognize emergency alerts and to help verify that the system works across broadcasters, wireless providers and emergency management organizations. Real alerts can be used for urgent threats such as tornadoes, floods, wildfires and AMBER Alerts.
Some people may not receive the test on their mobile phones because of device compatibility, LTE or 5G network connection, tower coverage, device settings or software configuration. Alert Ready also notes that Canadians cannot opt out of the system, including test alerts, because it is designed to warn people about imminent threats to life.
The test takes place during Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 3 to 9, 2026, and encourages Canadians to review local risks, household emergency plans and basic preparedness steps.
