The Canadian government has announced a new AI and Culture Advisory Council following the country’s first national summit on artificial intelligence and culture, in a move aimed at helping the creative sector respond to the fast-changing impact of AI on cultural production and creative industries. Ottawa said the council will provide ongoing advice to both government and the creative sector, with a focus on protecting Canada’s cultural industries while also supporting growth and innovation.
The announcement came after the National Summit on Artificial Intelligence and Culture, held in Banff, Alberta, from March 15 to 17, 2026, in partnership with the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. According to the federal government, the summit brought together around 300 participants from the cultural sector, technology, AI research networks, civil society and all orders of government to help shape a shared Canadian vision for culture in the age of artificial intelligence.
Federal officials said the summit’s discussions will also help shape Canada’s broader approach to artificial intelligence and inform the development of the country’s next national AI strategy. The summit focused on major themes including building AI tools that respond to the needs of creators and cultural industries, protecting creativity through responsible and reliable solutions, and empowering the cultural sector through adoption, training and skills development.
