Canada’s Arthritis Patients Still Waiting for Better Care

The 2026 State of Arthritis in Canada Report Card describes arthritis as a hidden health crisis, saying too many patients are still facing long waits for surgeries and specialist care, limited access to community-based programs, and major gaps in public health data.
The report says more than six million people in Canada live with arthritis, about one in five residents. It also warns that arthritis research remains chronically underfunded, receiving less than two per cent of investment from Canada’s largest federal health research funder, despite the disease’s wide impact on daily life, mobility, work, and independence.
According to the report card, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec received the highest grades among Canadian jurisdictions, but none scored above a C. Arthritis Society Canada says this shows that even the best-performing provinces remain far from meeting the needs of patients.
The findings also challenge the common belief that arthritis is only a condition affecting older adults. The disease can affect children, working-age adults, and seniors, creating pressure not only on the health system, but also on families, workplaces, and community support services.
In response, Arthritis Society Canada and its partners have launched Arthritis Action Now, a national plan calling for better data, faster access to diagnosis and care, stronger community supports, and more investment in research. The organization says incremental change is no longer enough for a disease affecting millions of Canadians.
For patients and families, the report carries a practical message: arthritis care is not just about pain management. It is about timely diagnosis, access to specialists, support for daily living, and a health system that recognizes the true scale of the disease.
