The Canadian government announced on Monday, April 20, 2026, an increase in the number of flights permitted between Canada and China, saying the move is intended to support trade diversification, improve travel options and strengthen air connectivity between the two countries. Transport Canada said the decision allows for a gradual expansion of direct services and broader reciprocal access for airlines on both sides.
Under the new arrangement, Canadian and Chinese airlines are now permitted to incrementally increase direct passenger services, operate up to 20 all cargo flights per week, and gain reciprocal access to all points in each country. Ottawa says the change will give travellers more choice while also supporting commercial ties and supply chains.
The federal government linked the move to the Canada China Economic and Trade Cooperation Roadmap and to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing earlier this year. It also noted that China was Canada’s second largest single country merchandise trading partner in 2025, with two way goods trade reaching 124.8 billion dollars.
