Canada Post is facing another major financial test after the federal government approved access to up to $673 million in funding to help the Crown corporation cover its operating needs through next March. The decision comes as the national mail service continues to struggle with deep losses and growing pressure to change the way it operates.
The new support follows a difficult year for Canada Post. The corporation reported a $1.57 billion loss before tax in 2025, while its parcels business saw revenue fall by about $850 million and volumes drop by roughly 79 million parcels compared with 2024. Canada Post linked the decline to the lasting impact of labour disruption, continued labour uncertainty, and structural restrictions that have limited its ability to compete.
For Canadians, the issue is no longer only about the balance sheet. It is also about what kind of postal service will remain in place. Canada Post has already begun preliminary work on a multi-year transformation, including the planned conversion of millions of addresses from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes, with early conversions expected in late 2026 and early 2027.
The federal government has described the funding as part of a short-term bridge while Canada Post works on long-term reform. In February 2026, Ottawa also announced up to $1.01 billion in repayable funding to help keep services running, while saying the status quo was no longer sustainable.
The debate now goes beyond whether Canada Post needs money. It raises a broader question about the future of public services in a country where mail delivery must reach major cities, small towns, rural routes, and remote communities, even as traditional letter mail declines and private delivery companies compete aggressively for parcels.
