Canada Updates Hawaii Travel Advice After Flash Flood Concerns

information related to Hawaii because of a flood watch. The important distinction is that Ottawa did not raise the overall U.S. advisory to avoid travel. The official page still lists the United States under “take normal security precautions,” while noting the weather-related development in Hawaii.

The trigger for the update was a severe weather event in Hawaii. In its latest bulletin on Friday, April 10, 2026, the National Weather Service in Honolulu said a Flood Watch remained in effect for Oahu, Maui County, and the Big Island through 6 a.m. HST on Saturday, while the watch for Kauai County had been cancelled because flooding was no longer expected to pose a threat there.

Local authorities have described the situation as more serious because the ground was already saturated from earlier March storms. Hawaii County said the new weather system could lead to road closures in low-lying areas, flash flooding, property damage, landslides in steep terrain, and travel disruption from strong winds and thunderstorms. The county issued a local emergency proclamation on April 8, 2026. At the state level, Governor Josh Green said on April 8 that a low-pressure system was bringing heavy rain and strong winds to Hawaii, with impacts forecast to continue through at least April 10.

For travelers, the practical takeaway is not that Canada is telling people to cancel Hawaii trips altogether. It is that travelers should closely monitor local weather alerts, road conditions, and official notices before moving between islands or driving through flood-prone areas while the warnings remain active.
