Ottawa says it is holding discussions with Washington on bilateral, sector-by-sector arrangements aimed at easing tariff pressure, while both sides prepare for the mandatory review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) due before July 1, 2026.
Canada’s trade minister Dominic LeBlanc said Ottawa is looking at targeted understandings that could cover key industries such as steel, aluminum, and autos, running in parallel with the broader USMCA review process.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said trade teams expect to meet in the coming weeks to discuss potential updates and add-on protocols as the review approaches.
